To Our Graduates...

On July 29th, our school held a graduation ceremony for our 15 pre-school graduates. Because of our busy schedule in preparing for this event, we, teachers, feel like we haven't fully expressed how we felt to our students. So we would like to take this moment to express how we feel to our pre-kindergarteners.

Dearest Graduates,

Congratulations on your achievements thus far.

We have had many cherished memories together that Rainbow Pre-School hopes you’ll carry with you for as long as you can. Yes, together, you have all squabbled and disagreed, but you all are wonderful children who knew when to listen to the teachers, and worked hard.

Most of you have been with us for two years and more, and we have watched you grow and blossom into the smart and astonishing individuals you are. Here we must part, for the next chapter in life has opened up for you: Kindergarten.

Through Rainbow Pre-school, you have nourished your young minds, and we, the teachers, know you’ll do very well in kindergarten. We hope your new school year will be filled with more amazing memories, and that you’ll continue showing the support and love to your future teacher as you have done for us. Make new friends, be good, be kind, and you will grow up to be upstanding and smart young adults.

Thank you for all the love and treasured memories you have brought to us teachers during your time with us. We hope you’ll continue filling your own life with happiness, love, and laughter.

You will be dearly missed, but you’ll always have a special place in our hearts.

We wish you all the best to come!

Love,

The Teachers of Rainbow Pre-School

Veggies? Veggies!

Starting last month, our school has started implementing nutrition class once a month. We introduce and have the students try fresh vegetables and fruits.

Since this is a new program that we are starting, last month we talked about tomatoes and cucumbers. A fruit and vegetable students were familiar with but not necessarily fond of. We read a book on how a tomato grows, and how it looks like inside. Afterwards, students got to wash both produce, smell and taste both the tomato and cucumber. We were surprised with the amount positive feedback we received from students who normally did not like to eat anything green.

This month, we introduced the produces they were familiar with again, but snuck in a vegetable they have yet to taste at our pre-school. Celery.

Students started out the beginning of class, excited to try the different types of vegetables.

First it was the cucumber. Last month, we tried it fresh with no dressing. This month, everyone had a little bit of buttermilk ranch to dip their vegetables in.

Next came the carrots. Look at the number of students who wants second helpings of the orange vegetable!

Celery was third. Because it was a new vegetable, students first got to smell and make observations on its shapes before the teacher cut it into pieces to serve.

All the students got a piece to dip in ranch then taste.

Tomato came next, and from looks of it, we had some mixed results.

Last was lettuce, something our students were very familiar with. Still it was different dipping the vegetable into ranch instead of having it already drizzled on, ready to serve.

And... surprise! Students who wanted MORE of the vegetables they tasted today, raised their hands and asked the teachers for more of a certain vegetable. (There was quite a number of "More celery, please.")

Whoever said, children don't like vegetables obviously haven't seen the students at our school!

Montessori?

A frequently asked question:

What is montessori?

Montessori Education was created by Dr. Maria Montessori, and can be traced back to 1907.
Her philosophy to education was an approach that called for child centered learning. This type of learning is for a child to be motivated and eager for knowledge. It values the human spirit in the development of children, physically, socially, cognitively, and emotionally.

Dr. Montessori’s method has garnered success for over 100 years throughout the diverse cultures of the world in schools.

We at Rainbow Preschool are proud advocates of the Montessori Education.

Here are examples of some of the hallmarks of this method used at Rainbow Preschool:

The Pink Towers:
• The purposes of the pink towers are for children to understand sequence and order by
building graduated blocks in 3 dimensional sizes.
• This activity develops visual and muscular perception, which in turn leads to a child’s
observation of their environment. In addition, a child increases coordinated movement.
• As equally important, the activity introduces math through size concept and prepares
students for the decimal and number system.

The Cylinder and Solid Insert:
• The purpose of this is to help children gain visual perception of depth and dimension.
• Encourages student to become aware of surroundings which includes height, length,
width, and depth of an object.
• Helps a child learn fine motor skills
• Fine tunes a child’s readiness for the finger and thumb form of a pencil grip

The Red and Blue Rods:
• Using the red and blue rods encourages a child to learn the names of numbers 1-10,
and visually associate the numbers with the correct quantity. This teaches numeral
recognition, quantity, and prepares a child for learning additions.

The Golden Bead Material / Counting Chain Arrows:
• Drill in the ability to count by 1’s, 2’s, 5’s, and 100’s.

The Trinomial Cube
• Has a direct purpose to teach children about the cube shape. However, this activity also
indirectly shows a child the mathematical form of trinomials- an introduction to algebra,
in preparation for formula proof, (a+b+c)3 at the elementary level.

Hope that shed some lights to what Montessori is!

SPRING UPDATE and MAY NOTICES

The weather is warmer... indicating SPRING is FINALLY here!

I wanted to update everyone with what has been going on with out pre-school during this transition from Winter to Spring. Also, we have a FACEBOOK! It is currently under construction but parents can look for their children's pictures and our weekly activities there.

In April, we had an EASTER party. The students decorated eggs, made baskets, went on a egg hunt, posed for easter pictures, and blew lots and LOTS of bubbles!

First things first,

THE EGG:
We both inked and wrapped the eggs.

Either way, the students were amazed to see the eggs change.

Next, we had an egg hunt.
The mission was to find the golden egg to get an extra treat from the Easter Bunny.

After the second group of kids, I was afraid I hid the egg too well. It was placed in plane sight in the lower branches of our small tree. But lo and behold, someone finally found it!

Yay~ to our winner!

Each class posed for pictures with their adorable masks and hats.

See the little bunnies?

Finally, BUBBLE TIME!!

Wooo~ Look at them fly~!

Funny Incident:

We blew up a large bunny (pictured above) for the students to pose for pictures. There was a breeze so the bunny moved, slightly. But one of the students was convinced that it would fly away therefore, held onto it crying till we had to 'save' it by bringing it inside away from the wind. ^^

MAY UPDATES!
We will be hosting out annual Children's Day celebration on May 5th, 2011. Please be sure to send your child to school in comfortable clothing because they will be running and jumping (we rented a jumper!) around.

May 5th is also our picture day! Pre-K students must be present to take their pictures on this day!

Happy 2011!

Already another year has passed and we start fresh to a new year.

During the last few months of 2010, we had our Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Day re-enacting, and Christmas Festivals. We had a lot of fun and took lots of pictures, but because of the many end of the year festivities, I have not had the time to update the blog as often as I wanted to.

First:
Halloween

All our children dressed up in a variety of costumes and went from classroom to classroom to receive treats. They looked absolutely adorable in their costumes! The older children were used to our traditions so they knew where to put the candies they received, but the younger children seemed a bit confused and refused to let go of their sweets.

Trick or Treat!

Our band of heros

Looks like he really did not want to put his sweets into his basket. haha

Afterwards, our Pre-K class dressed in their normal attires and went on a field trip to a nearby pumpkin patch. Pictures of their trip will be put into their album. Do to the request of some of the parents, we will not post them here.
But all in all, it was a very fun day for all of us.

Every year, our school does a mini Thanksgiving Day re-enactment where the Pilgrims first come to America and meet the Indians who help them survive on this newfound land.
The Pre-K class always play the Pilgrims and our younger children play the Indians.
The Pilgrims are ready to set sail on a dangerous journey!

After many months on the ship, the Pilgrims are tired and bored.

Who are you?

Giving thanks.

Bonus:
The Mini Tribe.
(There were many more pictures but some of our parents requested their child's picture not be uploaded onto our blog so we will not post them here. If your child is in Pre-K, be sure to look for the full collection in your child's album!

Last month we had our annual Christmas Recital! Hopefully all our parents were able to join us. The kids have been practicing for over a month and they performed beautifully. (With the exception of our baby class where 4 out of 5 kids had stage fright. But during the rehearsal, they did very well!) There are no pictures of this event as I was too busy emceeing to take pictures. But we have the video footage that we showed the children and they absolutely loved it!

Before the event, the children were able to meet Santa, and I am happy to say that only 1 child cried. Everyone else was very excited and happy.

That concludes our 2010 year, and during 2011, our staff promises to continue to provide the very best care for all our children.

Thank you!
