Veggies? Veggies!

Starting last month, our school has started implementing nutrition class once a month. We introduce and have the students try fresh vegetables and fruits.

Since this is a new program that we are starting, last month we talked about tomatoes and cucumbers. A fruit and vegetable students were familiar with but not necessarily fond of. We read a book on how a tomato grows, and how it looks like inside. Afterwards, students got to wash both produce, smell and taste both the tomato and cucumber. We were surprised with the amount positive feedback we received from students who normally did not like to eat anything green.

This month, we introduced the produces they were familiar with again, but snuck in a vegetable they have yet to taste at our pre-school. Celery.

Students started out the beginning of class, excited to try the different types of vegetables.

First it was the cucumber. Last month, we tried it fresh with no dressing. This month, everyone had a little bit of buttermilk ranch to dip their vegetables in.

Next came the carrots. Look at the number of students who wants second helpings of the orange vegetable!

Celery was third. Because it was a new vegetable, students first got to smell and make observations on its shapes before the teacher cut it into pieces to serve.

All the students got a piece to dip in ranch then taste.

Tomato came next, and from looks of it, we had some mixed results.

Last was lettuce, something our students were very familiar with. Still it was different dipping the vegetable into ranch instead of having it already drizzled on, ready to serve.

And... surprise! Students who wanted MORE of the vegetables they tasted today, raised their hands and asked the teachers for more of a certain vegetable. (There was quite a number of "More celery, please.")

Whoever said, children don't like vegetables obviously haven't seen the students at our school!
